The Magic Roundabout was indeed wonderful. It owed its wonderfulness entirely to the late Eric Thompson (father of Emma). who was taken from us tragically young. He was commisssionmed by the BBC to dub Serge Danot's animated films into English, but decided instead to cut out the excessive jabbering of the characters and write entirely new plots and scripts to fit the existing pictures, with all characters' speech reported by the languid narrator (himself).

'Brian?' said Dougal. 'Snails aren't called Brian! Snails are molluscs!'
