There might have been another reason for that, depending, of course, on the date of the French translation.

If it was in the 1930's, to have children saying their prayers might have been seen as aligning the book with Action Francaise, a political movement that would have been anathema to Ransome. France being somewhat more anti-clerical than Britain, to bring the Church in would be more of a political statement in France than it would be in Britain.
