I am going to think a bit about that. The country has to be the Philippines - no other possibilities in terms of striking the coast of China without passing Hong Kong first. I know Manila Bay fairly well, and the description seemed quite right in terms of leaving the light on Corregidor to starboard when outbound. The port is clearly a large and busy one, and only Manila would fit that description.

Time to compare the text with the pilot books, which I will do over the weekend.
