What sort of boots did the S,A D’s wear in WH? AR’s pictures indicate some sort of ankle length boot rather than a calf or knee length.
These boots would not have coped well with deep soft snow. I suspect that they were some type of walking boot with a sturdy sole so that skates could be strapped to them without damage.

Roger was always complaining, rightly or wrongly, about the screw set on his skates. I can vaguely remember that my father’s skates only had 2 bolts to set the length of the skate sole plate to match the size of the boot after that the skates were strapped on with leather straps. (The fixings were very similar to proper roller skates with metal wheels that made the most glorious noise if you could find a cobbled street!)

Does anyone still use goose grease for treating and waterproofing boots and shoes? I only use goose grease for cooking roast potatoes. I do use a leather balsam that contains beeswax and jojoba oil and softens leather well and will polish reasonably well.
