That's the sort of roller skates I had as a child--about 40 years ago, obviously well after AR's time setting. I always assumed that Roger had lined his skates up incorrectly with his boots, a problem I experienced regularly until I figured out that the skates slide around when you do that! Or perhaps he experienced another difficulty I had, when the "key" wouldn't quite fit over the screw because it wasn't exactly lined up.
