I suppose AR could have used "skulking", which implies hiding & being up to no good. "Lurking" seems less likely to end up in native trouble. Perhaps AR and his playmates used the word in the same way.

Personally, I don't like the use of that word to describe TarBoarders who read but don't post. "Lurking" seems more like laying low until you can't be seen by someone you'd rather not run into. I think what we have been discussing is actually "untalkative interest".
