I always thought of them as being somewhat like Nancy, or perhaps Daisy--rough & tumble girls, with tons of personality & a definite impishness. Not angelic, except when "bending" adults' will to theirs.

I agree with Ed that one of AR's greatest talents was gifting us all with "friends" who seem so real. Also his wonderful descriptions of the settings--on my first visit to Lake Coniston, I really felt it would not be at all strange to be walking along the lake road, hear a gabble of happy voices coming nearer, and discover the whole of the SAD's coming towards me (or more likely, ducking under a bridge or climbing over a wall!). As for the less well-described personalities, I would love to hear what people have gleaned about them. One of my favorites is Pete--so often referred to as "Young Pete"--who has one of the best scenes in the books when he manages to treadl on the huge fish! And then there's the tooth....
