ÒSteaming down the ThamesÓ, Laurence MonkhouseÕs illustrated log of a voyage down down the Thames the steam boat Phaeton has at last been published on ÒIf Not Duffers... Ó If anyone thinks that ÔArthur Ransome momentsÕ can only be experienced in childhood they should think again. Every little side stream is explored by Phaeton regardless of warning notices. Idle lock keepers are chastised. One feels that Nancy would heartily approve. The log displays a Roger-like concern for the quality of the food served on the voyage and one could be forgiven for concluding that PhaetonÕs steam installation was first and foremost designed for producing haute cuisine and only secondly as a means of propulsion.
