If the Beckfoot launch had an engine as described by Laurence, how did Molly get it started after the storm in SA

It could well be that the engine of a launch which lived in a nice covered boathouse, cosseted as all Windermere launches are, would be less bad tempered than an engine living in the bowels of a sailing yacht, continually shaken and wetted, unloved and disregarded except when desperately needed.

But I speak no more than the literal truth of my own experiences.
