The general newspaper practice is that summarizing an article online and linking to it is OK - in fact, it's wildly encouraged, since it might bring more readers to your Web site and make your advertisers happy - but copying all or most of it is frowned on, because then people don't have any reason to come to your site.

The argument here would be that the Globe and Mail spent the time and money to find Ransom's article in their archives and then type/scan it into their system, so they should get the reward of more visits to their Web site to read it.

As I said, in this case I doubt if anybody would complain (although with lawyers you never know); it was more of a general comment raised by the large amount of quoted material - and the fact that I had hit a slow moment at work
