CF talks about his “box” and “old box” as well as his “cabin trunk” in SA (Chapters 25,28,29). Titty calls it his “sea-chest”.

The burglars (SA) leave a pipe, so not all the villains (like the Hullabaloos in CC) smoke cigarettes. But AR needed something that the burglars left behind to attach to the wooden fish that CF carved, for them to find when they “went fishing”. The burglars would not have been the sort of person that smoked cigarettes in cigarette holders! Perhaps gay young things like the Hullabaloos would!
