arrive at the truth by debate

I would use the word 'knowledge' rather than 'truth' - there is a difference. In my earlier post I said 'I am learning things' - 'Things' is a pretty wide term, and it certainly eg includes the copyright 'fair dealing' rules set out by Jock today. There must be 3 million other 'things' I have learnt from TarBoard (the John Young/AR connection comes to mind), and many of these have cropped up during animated discussions, and yes, they include things I was wrong about before I read wiser counsels.

Whether it is appropriate to explore questions which can never be answered - the 'CODS' syndrome ('Colour Of Dixon's Socks') - is something I suspect we are not going to agree about. Here, a degree of tolerance is required on both sides. People like myself must realise that others like to pursue these issues and must allow them to do so without constantly commenting on it. The CODS devotees, on their turn, should try to realise that exploration of a topic which Ransome did not mention nor left any clue about seems to people like me futile, possibly counter-productive in the general movement forwards of Ransome scholarship and, frankly, a wee bit irksome.

Of course, there are 'borderline issues' - here I think the benefit of the doubt can be given!

If anyone thinks that the above is overblown nonsense, I can boil down my philosophy into one alternative sentence: OK, pursue whatever Ransome-inspired issues you like, but please don't make a meal of it! We will never, ever, know what colour those socks were, even if TarBoard lasts till Doomsday.
