I'd pictured Mrs. Dixon as having the frying pan on the wood stove, with the round metal dingus* over the fire box lifted out so that the pan was indeed over the fire. Her wrist wouldn't be bearing the weight, but she'd be holding the pan's handle with one hand while turning the bacon with the other. At least that's how I'd do it.

*It has a special name, but I don't remember -- nor the name of the special metal thingummy for lifting it without burning oneself.
