I have always found the US county fairs to be more glorified funfares than anything like the English shows.

Another place that still has these traditional fairs is Switzerland, in the mountains. From what I can remember, it's produce and livestock- and they have traditional wrestling. Bands, Alpenhorns (which don't match the description of 'bands') all that kind of stuff. And Fendant- white wine. Great fun. In cities (I'm thinking mainly of Basle and Geneva because I know them), they have street events which are positively mediaeval in form. For some reason the Swiss appear to have a great number of small local bands that play swing music, astonishingly well.

Mmmmmmmm.
