As Ed shows, the use of Master as in “Master Roger” for a small boy only occurs once, plus the references to Master Jim for both Jim Turner & Jim Brading when they were young. John is never addressed as Master John, and Dick is not addressed as Master Dick. Not even in WH when the D’s are staying at the Dixons and there are several conversations between Mrs Dixon & the D’s. And after the sheep rescue, Dick with Mr Dixon. “Miss” can be used for an adult unlike “Master”, though it would be a while since the GA was “Miss Maria” rather than “Miss Turner”!

My seventeen-year old son who is taller than me did have “Master Glenn Wilson” on his bank statements until recently - he has had the bank account since doing paper rounds for the Evening Post in Wellington. Now we only have a morning paper, delivered early by car!

In the mid-sixties my flatmate had the weekly “Time” delivered. The New Zealand edition, which was the Australian edition with different vertising. Once I noticed a letter to the editor from New Zealand, which were uncommon. The letter was said to be from a Christopher Bates aged seven (or so, I think) agreeing with a recent article that there should be more sex education in schools. But Ken burst out laughing when he noticed that they had published a letter (probably tongue in cheek) from “Master Bates”. I can’t recall now whether they published it using the title “Master”, but they did say after the name “aged ...“.
