I think the trend these days is to accept that there is no single correct dialect. Not so long ago, in the 1940s, my mother was forced into several years of speech therapy, because her accent was "too Southern" for teaching in Washington, D.C. schools. (We're talking mid-Virginian accent, not Deep South.) There was a "standard English pronunciation" to which educated Americans were expected to adhere. I doubt the speech therapy approach would be acceptable today. The English likewise had their "received pronunciation" -- *carefully says English rather than British in this case, given the opinions of certain Scots* -- whereas now the BBC actively recruits people with regional accents.

This doesn't make understanding differences any less interesting! Or less confusing, if you have no visual cues and are trying to discuss a broken computer with a help desk outsourced to India.
