Well, I was skeptical looking at your photo on TarBoard, but the last photo on your website--the one in which the bird has its head turned off to one side--is the exact profile of our Common Loon, your Great Northern. We often see one on our annual camping trip to the Olallie Lakes Wilderness north of our Mt. Jefferson. It's a high country version of your Lakes District--smaller lakes, forest roads & trails, great hiking, fishing & boating, all at about 5000-5000 feet in elevation. The loons' call is spectacular & haunting--something you'll always recognize once you've heard it. You might try getting a bit closer to yours. They startle easily, but if you can be a "Dick" and not step on any twigs (or splash the paddles), you might be able to get a really great photo!
Good luck :-)
