To be more Ransomesque, I should have titled this thread as Port vs Starboard.
Thanks David. Yes, I've heard that. The book I'm looking for really gets into the history of the matter throughout the world. Here in Lotus Land aka the Fraser Valley in the west coast of Canada, people are importing right hand drive cars from Japan.

As an aside, in 1971/72 I owned a left hand drive Holden in Viet Nam. The three speed gear shift, however, came up out on the right hand side of the transmission, on the passenger's side. It was a bit of a stretch.
Although the conventional traffic was meeting red to red, it didn't really matter. Two way streets became one way streets depending upon supply and demand: and the size of whatever one was driving.
The licence plate was an outdated one from the NZ Red Cross. My international driver's licence was also well outdated. Stops by the police were very common. But, a 500P note slipped between the pages always seemed to work well. Even, when after curfew and driving back from a party one would get stopped by the police who would shoot into the air. This was more effective than the traffic lights.
