That the UK is paralysed by its class divisions is one of the great modern myths. All civilisations have their class divisions, which can be based on birth, wealth or many other criteria.
My personal impression is that UK class-consciousness, as a subject of mainly left-wing media discussion, has increased greatly in my lifetime, while it has become less important to the rest of us.
Class divisions can even differ within a country. On my first visit to Australia, forty years ago, I was told that in Melbourne, they asked, "What school did you go to?"; in Sydney, "What do you earn?"; and in Brisbane, "What'll you have?"
Perhaps our AusTars Tarboarders can tell us if the Queensland approach has spread southwards?
To return the discussion to the original AR context, I have never had the slightest difficulty over his use of Daddy/Mother etc until it cropped up here this month. They seemed to me perfectly accurate usage of the time when they were written, and I first read them.
