The British Isles geographically cover the two main islands, Britain and Ireland plus a host of smaller ones around the coasts of both islands.
Brittany has always geographically been part of Europe and was last under British rule in, I think, the 13th century. Since then it has always part of France.
From time to time various political and religious differences muddy the waters regarding who has power over what.
