I too believe that rote learning of poetry can be just as useful (if not more so) as learning the times tables. And, of course, just reading poems so that people are exposed to them is also wonderful. Titty had heard 'Chapman's Homer' in school, and only remembered the sense of discovery and the final line- and aren't we glad that someone read it to her?

Of course, what is best is combining the memorizing/reading with teaching children how to understand poems or poetry, allowing them to unlock the secrets for themselves.
