Looking at Hugh Brogan’s biography of AR, Genia was a generally negative influence for most of his books. “She was never pleased with Arthur’s books at the time of their writing. The most recent one was always unworthy of him, and a falling-off from the last. Arthur was, invariably, dreadfully depressed by this attitude. ..... Where she was unique in persistently belittling his work and decrying whatever project he had in hand. In the end, she prematurely ended his writing career. Perhaps she was unconsiously envious of it.” (page 320).

She was scathing about PM, though “eventually, as with all Arthur’s works, she came to think of it as a masterpiece and to defend it against all criticism” (page 387).

Brogan mentions that after AR stopped work on CN (CITN) on 31 January 1949, he translated most of a French volume of West African folk tales into English, to be titled “The Country of Wild Beasts”. But there were difficulties with the French author, and the manuscript has disappeared.
