Another excellent author to look for is H. Alker Tripp, who also wrote uner the pseudonym of "Leigh Hoe". Look for his volume "Shoalwater and Fairway" for brilliant descriptive writing of sailing around the Thames estuary from around 1924, which may put him a shade earlier than MG. The skipper of the small gaff cutter "Shoal Waters" [whose name escapes me for the moment - another Senior's moment] also writes very well. There must be something in the water[s] there that breeds good writers.
