What strikes me more than anything else is how well the draconian planning regulations seem to have worked in the Lake District. Anywhere else, over that time span, I'd have expected to see far more development. Given that tourism is the major economic activity in the Lakes, the locals seem to be doing well out of their restrictions.

One result is that for AR lovers, the scenes could still come straight out of one of his illustrations; look at the Freshwater Biological Association's webcam at the Windermere Ferry; the view across to Bowness looks as though it is exactly the same as when AR would have drawn it.

Pin Mill is much the same. I guess that's also down to planning restrictions, although there it might be due to lack of economic activity.
