The mast is first created as an octogon and then smoothed as John did in SW.
This is an over simplification. CF worked on it before handing over to John.
So it would have been planed from octagon to hexadecagon and then to
duotriacontagon before being further smoothed with sandpaper.
Smaller spars can be eight sided on machine but with larger spars it is
down to the shaper with drawknife a power plane. Traditional wooden
planes and a lot of skill and judgment are then applied to perfectly shape
or round the mast, bit by bit until ready for sanding through the different
grades of glass paper. Ask any experienced mast maker how the accuracy is
achieved and they would say by feel. They know when the mast is perfectly
round or pear shaped and they very rarely need the use of calipers, to tell
them what they can sense.
