Google Books is a wonderful new research tool. Typing in "Better drowned" leads to a
long list of books where that phrase appears most of them referring to SA.
Clicking the link takes one directly to the page of the book where the phrase appears.
Two references that I found particularly interesting were an essay on responsibility in:
Work and Organisations in Popular Culture and John Berry's account of how he found
the field up which Roger tacked to his mother in Discovering Swallows and Amazons
