Though often irreverant to Authority, two spirited, feminist daughters, brought up by a single mother, befriend family of outsiders who care about green concerns, education and self-improvement in a practical, problem solving first two novels. Potential conflicts based on class and (in later works) nationality are raised but treated as non-issues by the protagonists.
