Today on BBC Radio 4, Alan Plater was describing how his agent tried to get him to write a children's story. By way of background, he began:
"I never took to the so-called children's classics. As far as I was concerned, Christopher Robin, the Famous Five and Swallows and Amazons wouldn't have lasted five minutes in Jarrow, where I was born, or in Hull, where I was brought up and educated. They were so wet, they would have evaporated."
Nancy Blackett - wet?
