Swallow was built by Crossleys boatyard at Arnside on the estuary of the River Kent. If you walk along the Arnside promenade downstream, there is an old building on which you can just discern the name "Crossley".
The Kent estuary is indeed an extensive area of sand which covers rapidly as the tide rises. There is often a small tidal bore, reaching 2 feet at times I understand, and a siren warns people to get off the sandy channels when the bore is imminent.
