An internet search has not revealed what charcoal burners did in winter. One important factor may be that they were dependent on wood-cutting, and followed the woodcutters about - we see this in Swallowdale. On two sites I have found, they say that burners' families lived in the camps, but I suspect that customs varied, and that this would not include winter.
