You couldn't expect a geographer to pass up an opportunity like that.... Actually, David Brooks is much closer (sorry, Dave Thewlis). Using 1993 population data, New Hampshire does come out as the most TARry state, just ahead of Maine. Interestingly, the top six are the six New England states (next are Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, in that order). However, Dave may take some consolation from the fact that Idaho is the top non-New England state, at number 7. The two states with the most members (California and New York) come well down the list, at 23rd and 21st respectively. As people have noted, New England's prominence must reflect the popularity of boating there,as well as their dominantly British settlement background. If anyone wants to send me county-by-county figures for the UK I'd be glad to do the same for them.
