In Ralph Moody's 'A Horse of a Different Color,' set in the 1920's in Kansas, the local operator would make 'line calls,' which were general announcements to the community. (Telegraph, Telephone, tell a woman)
Moody's best known book is Little Britches, about his childhood in Colorado in the early 1900's.
