There is a downside to owning your own boat

True, all true.

But all this doesn't even start to outweight the knowledge that your own boat is there, when you want her, for whatever you want her for. Hiring doesn't compare for a minute. Dick found this in PM: But now, when his back felt as if it would never be straight again...she was his own boat and nobody else's.

I suppose those who have never felt the feeling can never empathise with "The Harp Song of the Danish Women":-

You steal away to the lapping waters,
And look at your ship in her winter-quarters.

I Imagine that most who read TARBOARD will not be familiar with the Cartoon series 'Hagar the Viking' - indeed I don't even know where they were printed. And I don't know how to copy my favourite which is displayed on my wall, even if copyright would allow it. But Hagar is saying:-

"Look at her sitting there so calm and serene and beautiful! I can honestly say that I love her more today than the very first time I saw her"

To which his friend replies:-

"That's beautiful, Hagar. I wish I owned a boat!"
