The OED records how language is used not how it should be used. When my late brother and I were growing up our parents only called us by names or collectively as 'the children'. Kids, apart from being poor English, always has overtones of delinquency or is used in a pejorative manner by those with little or no respect for their children.
AR charcters may not be real but it did not stop him giving them the respect they deserved.
