Alan & Peter - I agree totally, there is just something about 'kids' that shouts out laziness in language and attitudes towards the children. Friends who parents, and I know to be good caring parents, still make me cringe when they use it.
I've always believed that respect for others has be earned (the old line about respect your elders is a nonsense - what if your elder is mass murderer, do you still have to respect them because they are older than you?), and referring to children as kids (particularly in the way politicians do in attempt to ingratiate themselves) only shows a lack of respect.
AR may have used kids, but as I noted in a previous post not in referring to his main characters or in his own voice.
