The term 'kid' or 'kids' was used by other authors during the 20/30s eg Elsie J Oxenham in many of her Abbey series of books (very middle class!), so I don't see what the problem is with AR using it, or not!! I don't think you would call EJO 'sloppy' and her books were published right through into 40s/50s. What about other similarly dated books, anyone?
