Personally, I enjoyed both Mary Poppins books and the new Mary Poppins musical. I feel the same for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I enjoy musicals as their own form of art. (I also love Shakespeare and Stoppard, so I'm not entirely a barbarian!) I'm sure that the theatre gift shops will sell copies of the books along with the T-shirts and sea shanty CDs.
My feeling is that anything that introduces people, especially children, to books is good- even if it's not the way that we want to be introduced. I have a niece who loves manga. From there, she's developed a love for both reading and writing fantasy. Now if SA involved vampires, she'd love the books. (Perhaps that's Missee Lee's secret.....)
