English windows tended to be open a lot more than today - or in the States. I remember the horror caused when my father insisted on opening his office window in Midwinter at the University in Oxford Ohio.

Notice that the GA only questioned the fact that Nancy and Peggy's bedroom window was open because there was thunder and rain - clearly it would normally have been open.

Downstairs windows would normally have been closed in the evening when people went to bed to avoid burglary, but this probably was not considered to be a very serious risk in the heart of the Lake District at that time. The GA clearly expected that the study window would have been closed but I doubt if she would have personally checked that this had been done.
