As part of BBC 4's season last week on children’s television in the programme about the 1960s they showed a clip from the 1963 TV adaptation of S&A (John, Susan and Titty looking at the island and speculating on if it was inhabited).
It was shown as example of the kind of programme the BBC was making at the time, and why it was losing child viewers to the newly launched ITV who were using a lot of imported programmes from the USA.
What is interesting is that the BBC still has the film, and it seemed to be of very good quality (the image rather than the acting etc.) Has it ever been shown again? I can remember it being on TV as a 10 year-old and being disappointed by it, but I have no recollection of it being shown since.
