I first came across these terms in Claire Kendall-Price's book, "in the footsteps of the Swallows and Amazons", which is a great book about visiting possible locations. Swallowdale 1 is in the fells to the west of the Southern end of Coniston, so an area AR would have known as a child. The area identified is in the right place, with a nearby Trout Tarn and Horseshoe Cove, but I find the valley quite disappointing, not big enough nor sheer-sided enough.
Swallowdale 2 is on the west side of the Lake District in Miterdale, up from Eskdale and Boot. I've not been up there, but it looks quite big from photos, and perhaps someone else can explain the Ransome connection to this area. There is a Trout Tarn nearby called Burnmoor Tarn.
Hence my use of the term Swallowdale 3 to provide a quick reference to the Tilberthwaite Ghyll valley and cave.
