The short answer to 'what kind of a parent...' is the answer my grandmother
gave the local librarian when my mother wanted to borrow a 'mature' book,
and the answer my mother gave one of my schoolmistresses when I wanted to
read 'Catch-22', and the answer I will give anyone who pokes around about
what MY children may or may not read: Anything they CAN read, they MAY read.
The occasional trouble and/or embarrassment that this point of view may
bring is worth it in the long run in instilling the values of intellectual
freedom. W- G- has been censored and challenged (formal complaints filed)
through the years. LOTF was banned from seven schools in Florida in 1987,
and the ban was lifted only after 44 parents sued the school board. In 1988
a committee of the Toronto Board of Education ruled that LOTF was "racist
and recommended that it be removed from all schools." It has been challenged
in at least 6 other U.S. school districts. Incidentally, my source for
the figures is the American Library Association's Banned Books Resource
Guide, 1998.
Um, by the way, can we say who and what we're talking about now? Has anyone
NOT gotten it yet?
