possibly a bit too nice to judge by contempoary accounts of boys training?

I once was good friends with a former Chief Stoker Instructor at Ganges, now sadly deceased.

He always assured me that accounts of the discipline there were grossly exaggerated and that everybody was always as nice as pie to the Trainees. He denied stories of cutting the grass with scissors, and that sort of thing.

He himself was a charming man to work with on a social basis - but I do wonder how much to believe him on this particular subject!

Standing on top of the 180 foot mast and saluting at Divisions was certainly no fable - I saw it happen myself. And it was considered a great honour to be chosen to do it.
