As someone working in visual arts, I can confirm that my intelligent, visually literate 20 year old students are doing a lot of informed looking and not much reading. Reading does seem to be disappearing, which saddens me, as after all reading is about an imagery of the imagination. But to be positive in a pragmatic sort of way, if seeing Disney films encourages kids to buy 'the book of the film' and get them interested in reading that way, fine. I don't think that classic children's literature will disappear, but its readership will certainly diminish in an image-saturated (and product-driven) world.
