Yes, these sound like good points to me, and it is entirely possible Ransome had a sufficiently good general knowledge of the RN. As you say, the Navy would have occupied a much higher profile in Britain in the pre WW1 period, when he was growing up, as well as between the two wars.

Hopefully most naval fathers were as you describe, although I doubt it was universal: Holland, at least, gives one example of a WW1 submariner who permanently bullied his daughter (blaming her because he'd wanted a son to follow him into the navy.)

That, of course, is a reminder that Nancy, irrespective of her ruthless and decisive leadership qualities, would never have got near a destroyer at that time - unless invited aboard for a party.
