Thanks, Peter. That's almost it, but not quite. I've got tight little on an LP called SONGS OF THE SALTY SEA by Uffa Fox with the Mike Sammes Singers, and I will try to find time to listen to it tonight. Uffa Fox is the chap who taught Prince Charles to sail and has the sort of voice that would be useful for shouting orders in a Force Nine gale. The Mike Sammes Singers were nice young men in grey suits with ties who sang songs very melodiously in the Seventies to a background of soft lights. What I always loved about the LP was the stange juxtaposition.

I have a much less musical but much more convincing CD of sea shanties recorded in the 1950s from the genuine article who all evidently at the point of falling out of (or being thrown out of) the pub.
