E I would second Georgian, because of the hall down the middle of the house both up- and downstairs.

I think that with 'Georgian' we are getting close although the rather plain roof over the main block is a stumbling point.

PH My view is that Beckfoot was probably not an earlier house that was substantially altered in the 19th century...Everything I have read ... convinces me that Beckfoot was a 19th century build - probably Victorian.

AB I can't remember anything in the text or illustrations which might suggest that Beckfoot was built anytime but the 19th C.

I'm with Peter H and AndyB. There are none of the tell tale details which would indicate a rebuild of a substantially older house. However, Beckfoot's higgledy-piggledy' layout is a strong clue to rebuilding and extension at later date. Could we agree on dating the original Beckfoot as Regency (early 19th C), but with some later Victorian rebuilding?
