Noel Streatfield's novel Tennis Shoes shows an ordinary family (father a family practice doctor, stay-at-home mom) being avid tennis fans and competitors. The book was first published in 1937, so is reasonably contemporary to the SA series.

The youngest daughter (and potential tennis star) Nicky Heath is quite Nancy-like.
