In the end the Swallows ordinary folk like you and me triumph. Did the tumultuous economic and political upheavals of the 1920's and 1930's have any impact upon AR's mind when he wrote the books?

I'd say that AR's time in post-revolutionary Russia would have had a large impact. He was known to feel sympathy for the Soviets and that emerged in his columns for the 'Manchester Guardian'- at the time the sheer murderousness of the leadership wasn't as well known as it is now, and the change from Czarist Russia to the Soviet Union was such a huge improvement that he was bound to be captivated by the benefits of social equality. Especially when you consider how class-ridden British society was at the time.
