Fifty (or even 70) years ago, a lot of middle-class houses had a tennis court. By the time I met them, they were usually rather down-at-heel. By now, they have mostly vanished. At the end of my road is a rather Beckfoot-like house, built about 100 years ago. I am now the third house from it; mine is built on its orchard, so the garden is full of apple trees, my neighbour's is on the tennis court - no trace remains - and the house nearest to the old one is quite recent, and just built on half of the remaining garden.
