Peter - I said 'tad' upper crust - not disgracefully rich or royalty! Lets face it, the Beckfoot people were not exactly just scraping a living, right? People in town had to have a certain amount of wealth even in order to afford to hire a court and own the tennis paraphernalia though - none of this playing in jeans then! Any hobbies would have been the first thing to go if the income earner lost his/her job and only the better off of the working class would generally considered tennis as an opportunity to improve social standing. The worse off were too busy trying to survive.
